This course is intended to provide advanced clinical students with exposure to the conceptual models, professional issues, and skills that are requisite for effective clinical supervision. Objectives include students becoming knowledgeable about the supervisory relationship, supervision models, evaluation, different teaching formats and interventions, current research, and legal and ethical issues pertinent to clinical supervision. This didactic seminar will be largely discussion oriented and will consist of weekly assigned readings and student presentations. Students are expected to keep up with the readings and to actively contribute to discussion of the week's topic. In addition, several didactic seminars will focus on role-plays, observational and experiential learning, and the implementation of supervision skills. We will also discuss cognitive and behavioral approaches to clinical supervision. Supervision techniques will include reviewing cued video or audiotapes, case conceptualization, interpersonal process recall, written critique of audiotapes, direct instruction emphasizing skill acquisition, and role-play.
