Finding books in the University Libraries, using InfoLinks:

Basic Searching in Infolinks

is the official page about searching the online catalog, from the Libraries' web site. It has links to many helpful tips, from the menu on the right side.

Meanwhile:

Keyword: Use a keyword search if you do not know an author's name, a book title, or a subject heading for your topic. The catalog will start on a basic Keyword search, or you may click on the Keyword tab and then type words or phrases in the text box. Click on Submit or press "enter" to start the search.

Author: Use an author search, last name first, to find books by a specific author. For example: click on the author tab, then type: Matthiessen, Peter or Walker Alice to find books by these authors in our Libraries. Correct spelling counts.

Title: Use the first words of a particular title for a title search. Click on the title tab and then type in the first part of the title, such as Educational Attainment.

Keyword searches are also useful if you are looking for proceedings or other publications which may have titles that vary, or if you aren't certain of a specific title. If you are in doubt about a title, use a word search.

Subject: Use a subject search if you are looking for biography or literary criticism on an author or if you know an appropriate Library of Congress subject heading. For example, click on subject, then type the subject, such as: United States History Civil War 1861-1865 (NOT American Civil War) or Indians of North America (not Native Americans) or all-terrain cycling (rather than mountain biking).

If you are in doubt about a subject heading, try a keyword search. If you find appropriate material that way, the subject headings that appear in the lower part of the record on appropriate books may be used to find more material on that subject. Use an author's name, last name first, as a subject search to find literary criticism.

If the screen shows a list of records, click on the title of the one for which you would like to see more information. Each record screen will show a location and a call number, which indicates where the book is and what it is about. Since the searches cover all the libraries on campus, you may see different locations: MAIN is the main library, Mullins; Media is the Performing Arts and Media Department in Mullins. FAL is the Fine Arts Library, Law is the Young Law Library in Waterman Hall, and so on.
