WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR A HIGHLY MOTIVATED DOCTORAL STUDENT STARTING IN THE SPRING 2009 WHO IS INTERESTED IN RESEARCH IN THE AREAS OF METABOLIC CONTROL AND CELL DEATH/CELL DEGRADATION (for more information, see OPEN POSITIONS in the menu)

A Drosophila molecular genetics lab at the University of Arkansas. We work on different aspects of gene regulation, using a combination of genetic, cytogenetic and biochemical approaches.

In particular, we are interested in:

Gene control by steroid hormone

How can a systemic steroid signal turn specific sets of genes on and off in different cells and at different times in development?

How do nuclear receptors mediate specific hormone responses?

How does the steroid hormone ecdysone direct programmed cell death leading to the destruction of larval tissues during Drosophila metamorphosis?

The role of chromatin structure in gene regulation

What is the molecular nature of chromatin-modifying factors that control gene expression and other nuclear functions such as mitosis?

How do these factors cooperate to establish stable expression patterns of developmental genes, such as the homeotic genes, that are maintained over many cell generations?
