Course Description
This course provides an introduction to the arthropods that are pests as well as those that serve as vectors of organisms that cause disease in animals and humans. Epidemiology and replication cycles of vector-borne pathogens with major medical and veterinary importance will be included. Information presented will focus on biology and host animal-arthropod-pathogen interaction as well as the behavior of annoying and venomous pests of humans and animals. Integrated management of these arthropods will be discussed. Demonstrations during the course will emphasize the recognition and identification of both arthropods of medical and veterinary importance and selected pathogens.

Course Objectives
   1.  Provide an introduction to members of the Phylum Arthropoda that include representatives of direct or indirect importance to the health of humans, pets and livestock.

2.  Course will also cover clinical symptoms of disease, arthropod, pathogen and parasite life-cycles, epidemiology, and integrated arthropod management procedures.

3.  Recent advances in the field of medical and veterinary entomology such as DNA analysis, will be presented.
